For sure, there is joy in watching your children grow and develop. Recently I became the grandfather of a beautiful girl. Having been nervous about it, I discovered it was, for once, all I was promised it would be. Pure joy!

I find joy in art, beauty, the process of creativity, in learning, curiosity satisfied, in striving for the worthy cause and stretching the mind.

I find real pleasure in simple things – the meal with friends or family, the study of a beautiful work of art, music which stirs the emotion; and in the feeling of achievement when lucky enough to achieve.

And yes, if we're all honest, there is pleasure in ‘me’ time, just settling down with a book, closing the door, putting away the communications devices and taking your mind out of its daily cares and doing for once simply what you want to do!

I have just finished Rome and Jerusalem by Martin Goodman, which has explained to me the significance of the sacking of the Second Temple in 70 AD in way I had not understood before. And now someone has given me ‘The Chosen Few’ by Maristella Botticini and Zvi Eckstein in which I am already engrossed.

Because I am such a regular visitor to Israel, over 180 visits at the last count, I have found, amongst all the stress of the politics, huge pleasure in discovering the country and its extraordinary character. I have seen the religious sites of the Galilee, the Jordan Valley and the Holy City, which from the earliest age were part of my upbringing, but which I never thought I would actually walk around in person. Marvelled at how close Jerusalem can be to Tel Aviv, and how different. Seen the spectacular exhibition of Ai Weiwei at the Israel Museum. Been presented with examples of mind-bending new technology which will define how we will live and work in the future. And eaten as well as anywhere in the world – great and imaginative cuisine with fantastic local produce, and buckets of imagination.

These are joys which are obvious.

Not so obvious is the pleasure found not in ‘self’ but in service. Most of us want to live useful as well as happy lives and indeed find happiness in the thought that we may contribute to the sum of human happiness and not just our own.

I have been fortunate enough, since I left political office, to work in some of the poorest places in the world, especially in Africa where, though the frustrations and challenges can be immense, the opportunity to do good and to see it take practical shape is uplifting: basic programmes of maternal health and childcare which can be measured in lives saved, economic development which brings light and clean water and the education of a new generation of young Africans willing and eager to change the countries for the better.

So joy comes in many forms. But joy found in purpose is best of all.

Chapter 2
